Genre Research: Knives Out


Knives Out is a recent thriller film about figuring out who killed the very wealthy family member. This movie came out in 2019 and is a thriller film. This is the genre we are researching. Being a thriller movie, it uses a lot of genre elements that other thriller's use. It also uses many genre elements that we ourselves want to use. One genre element this movie uses that we plan to use in our thriller film is the plot twist. It surprises its audience by keeping the real murderer a secret, finally revealing it as the last person you would suspect. We want to use this theme of a plot twist to confuse our viewers and keep them on the edge of their seats. The twist villain follows the thriller convention that the surprise antagonist is someone close to the protagonist and that the protagonist slowly uncovers clues and red herrings to discover that they really are the true villain.  Knives Out also uses a lot of suspense to keep you watching that we also want to use. One way it uses suspense is by giving you the same amount of information as the characters. This keeps you trying to figure out who did it like a detective at the same time as the actual detective in the movie. We want to incorporate this method of suspense to keep the audience entertained and engaged. By doing this we can also better hide our twist villain by giving it away at the same time as the characters figure it out just like in Knives Out. Another way Knives Out reveals the twist villain is through giving slow and subtle hints throughout this movie. This gives viewers with a watchful eye the opportunity to figure out who did it long before the movie reveals it. We would also like to include this theme of foreshadowing and clues to give our audience a chance to figure it out and to keep them engaged. One element from Knives Out that we would not include is the comedic element. The movie uses a combination of many different genres such as thriller and comedy. Because of this we do not want to use most of the comedic elements found in the movie. This is to keep it completely a thriller movie and not a combination of a ton of genres. Another element we would not take from the movie is the element of all the suspects being a member of the family. We do not plan to take this element from the movie because we do not want one of our twist villains to just all be a family because we will not base it off exactly how Knives Out did it.

As I stated previously, I was the one who recorded the film. Adding one more person (Addison) not including Sean’s dad to the cast and characters. This person was Addison. Due to there being so much people, filming the car scene was a little difficult. Thankfully Seans dad has a minivan. This minivan has multiple seats however it is still crammed when you are trying to film a video. Some issues I had with filming were trying to get everyone in the frame. This is because Beckett was on the left side and Sean was on the right side but there needed to be space in the middle so that Addison driving could be seen clearly. Although I do have experience with filming this was still tricky. However, with some adjustments that were made, I figured it out by using a wider angle with the phone. Scheduling a film Schedule - Production Blog

 When we first started filming, Me and Camille had to figure out how we were going to finish our film on time. Me and Camille are very busy, so it's critical that we plan out how we can film without interfering with any of our other activities. I have Water Polo and work after school, so I wouldn't be able to work on our film after school, so filming on the weekend is the only option. I had the bright idea of filming each of our individual parts in our spare time. Fortunately, the majority of the short film can be shot separately, with only a few scenes needing to be shot together. I will be filming my scenes at my house, while Camille will be filming hers at her house. Camille needs to film the scene where Courtney is at her house planning how she will embarrass Macie.   Today, we are planning out our schedule for the first scene in our short film. The first scene of our film takes place at Macie’s house. We decided to shoot this scene at Camille’s house because it has a better set up for what we are looking for. When planning out what day we want to film, we both decided that it would be best to do it over the weekend since we are both very busy during the week. Julie will come over to my house around 11-12 pm to film the first scene. In this scene, Macie is getting ready for school. She will be “waking up” in my bed and getting ready for the day. Some of the props for this scene include a hairbrush, makeup, and for her costume, it will most likely be a plain shirt with either jeans or leggings to make it similar to what most highschoolers wear.
