Title Research: Red Notice

 Title Research: Thriller: Red Notice

  • What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

There were many titles displayed during the opening sequence. Many were for the producers and executives that created the film. Other titles were for the various companies that helped produce the film. Finally, at the end one last title covered the entire screen providing a definition of what red notice means.

  • What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

The opening sequence starts with 2 main set pieces. One is the beginning of what seems like a documentary. The narrator explains the story of Cleopatra's 3 eggs while pictures of the eggs and Cleopatra move across the screen. The second set-piece is in real life and slowly starts to drown out the noise of the narrator. It then shows someone making a fake egg based on all the pictures we just saw from the documentary-sounding intro.

  • What connotations do these images carry?

The first set of images carries a very formal and historical connotation. They do this through the documentary style, which is known for being formal, factual, and often about historical events. They also do this by showing very old pictures and newspaper clippings showing where they got their sources. The second set of images carries a less formal connotation and one of deception. It seems less formal because it blocks out the sound of the nice narrator with the sounds of a 3D printer and a drill. After that, it shows someone making a fake replica of the famous eggs making it seem malicious because you do not know the purpose of the fake eggs.

  • How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

The film establishes a thriller feeling from the outset by creating suspense. It does this by introducing the fact that there are 2 eggs out there and one has never been found. After telling us this it shows a man building a fake egg. The only way these can relate is if the man was either planning on pretending, he had the third egg or was planning on stealing one of the 2 known ones and replacing it with the fake. We quickly find out it is likely the latter because it then shows a title showing the definition of a red notice which is someone who is an international thief. By telling us this definition it heavily hints that the movie will be about the suspenseful story of how this man stole or steals the egg.

  • What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The main strategy used to appeal and draw in its target audience is the use of suspense and wonder in the opening sequences. It does the wonder part during the first part with the narrator. It does this by explaining how for a long time Cleopatra’s eggs were thought to be fake and a myth. It then reveals 2 were somewhat recently found, but the third one has never been found. It then introduces the suspense by showing someone making a fake egg. This creates suspense by making us wonder for what reason someone could need a perfect replica of Cleopatra’s famous eggs. The suspense leads you to think of only 2 uses of it. That being to pretend you own the lost 3rd egg or stealing one of the known 2 and replacing it with this fake.

  • How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

Technology has been used very effectively through the movie’s use of camera angles, transitions, and editing techniques. One effective use of the technology was how they consistently shot at a low angle so that you could not see very many details about the person creating the fake egg. They also use many close-ups and extreme close-ups so you can see how exactly the person is being while making the egg. They transition from the narrator's scene to the one with the person by showing they were the one watching it and slowly cutting the audio of it, so we only hear the person making the egg. An editing technique they use is cuts. They cut to various angles of the egg and the process of its manufacturing. They start with the frame being 3D printed and then showing it being covered in the case and finish with showing the details like the painting and the embedded jewels.
