Title Research: The Woman In The Window

  1. What titles are displayed during the opening
    sequences?

There are only 2 titles shown in this opening sequence. The first one is showing a title showing what studio the film is presented by. Then there is another title showing the name of the film. Both of these titles were in a red hard font. These are the only titles displayed in the opening sequence.

  1. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

There is a theme of what types of images are used. Mostly seeing dark empty, lifeless rooms across a very large home. Also included in the opening sequence were images of a man being choked on a screen. Both images were prioritized in showing the “emptiness” and the building of suspense.

  1. What connotations do these images carry?

These images may seem subtle but build eerie suspense. The dark rooms create a connotation of emptiness. The images of the man being choked show slight aggression and perhaps foreshadowing to what may happen later in the film.

  1. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from
    the outset?

You can immediately feel the thriller genre set in in the opening sequence. The slow movements and darkness get the viewer on the edge of their seats. The images as well as the font used in the titles being red and just the nature of them builds suspense.

  1. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to
    its target audience?

The target audience in this film would be young adults looking for a suspenseful/horror/thriller film. In order to reach this target audience, different strategies are used. For example, the main protagonist shown is a middle to younger-aged woman. This woman seems to be struggling to wake up and has a long day ahead of her. When viewers can relate to the characters, they are more likely to be engaged. Also, the slow movements keep the viewer wondering where they will be next.

  1.
How has technology been used effectively? You want
to consider camera angles, transitions and editing
    techniques.

Technology was used very effectively in this opening sequence. Shown in the film were a lot of slow-moving shots. For example, a pan shot over dim lighting of a very large home shows the vast emptiness. Also showing this was a tilt shot yet again in dim lighting of a very large staircase. As stated before the strong red font used for the titles is a strategy of technology that builds suspense in a thriller film.
